Midjourney has made V8.1 its default model, with faster renders and better prompt control.

Midjourney’s switch to V8.1 gives users a clearer baseline for everyday image generation. The update says SD images arrive in 4 seconds, HD in 12 seconds, and HD output is 4x the resolution of V7.

The biggest change is simple: Midjourney has moved the default model from V7 to V8.1 after testing and user feedback. That means new jobs now start from the newer model unless you choose something else.

This matters because defaults shape daily output. If you generate often, you will feel the change immediately in prompt handling, speed, and image consistency without changing your workflow.

  • Default model: V8.1
  • Previous default: V7
  • Announcement date: Jun 11, 2026

2. Better prompt obedience

Midjourney says V8.1 is smarter, more coherent, and better at following detailed prompts. For users who write precise scene descriptions, product shots, or character constraints, that usually means fewer retries.

The practical gain is control. Instead of fighting the model to keep key details in place, you can spend more time refining the idea and less time correcting missed instructions.

  • Stronger adherence to detailed prompts
  • Improved coherence across outputs
  • Better text rendering than earlier versions

3. Faster image generation

The speed jump is one of the easiest benefits to measure. Midjourney says images appear in only 4 seconds in SD and 12 seconds in HD, which makes iteration much easier during ideation sessions.

That speed can change how you work. When a model returns results quickly, you are more likely to test variations, compare compositions, and keep momentum while the idea is still fresh.

4. Higher-resolution HD output

With HD mode enabled, V8.1 renders at twice the size and 4x the resolution of V7 images. That is the part creators will notice most when they need cleaner detail for larger displays or closer inspection.

It also gives you more room to crop, refine, or repurpose an image after generation. If you work on posters, concept art, or presentation visuals, the extra detail should be useful right away.

  • HD mode enabled by default for higher detail
  • 2x the size of V7 in HD
  • 4x the resolution of V7 in HD

5. Stable style and reference behavior

Midjourney says style references, personalization, and aesthetics remain consistent between V7 and V8.1. That lowers the risk of a default-model change disrupting a tuned look or a repeatable brand style.

There is one exception worth noting: V7 omni-reference stays available for now while Midjourney finishes training the improved version for V8. If you depend on that feature, you still have a path forward while the newer work is completed.

  • Style references remain consistent
  • Personalization remains consistent
  • V7 omni-reference is still available for now

How to decide

If you want the best everyday default, V8.1 is the obvious pick because it is faster, more accurate with prompts, and stronger in HD. It is the safer starting point for most users who care about output quality and turnaround time.

If your workflow depends on a specific older behavior or on V7 omni-reference, keep that in mind before switching everything over. Midjourney also says V8.0 alpha will be deprecated in two weeks, so teams should plan for the new default rather than treat it as optional.
