5 GitHub Copilot plan changes for users

GitHub Copilot’s Individual plans now have paused sign-ups, tighter limits, and model changes.

GitHub says the update is meant to protect existing customers, and one key detail is that Pro+ offers more than 5X the limits of Pro.

1. Paused sign-ups for paid individual plans

The biggest change is simple: GitHub has paused new sign-ups for Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Student. If you already have one of those plans, you are not being removed, but new activations are on hold for now.

This matters most for people who were planning to subscribe this week. GitHub says the pause is meant to help it serve current customers with a more predictable experience, while keeping Copilot Free open for new users.

  • Paused: Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Student sign-ups
  • Still open: Copilot Free sign-ups
  • Existing paid users: access remains active

2. Tighter usage limits on individual plans

GitHub is also tightening usage limits for individual plans. The company says those limits are now shown in VS Code and Copilot CLI, which should make it easier to see where you stand before you hit a cap.

For users who rely on Copilot every day, this is the practical part of the change. You can still use the product, but the new rules make it more important to watch consumption and know when a reset is coming.

  • Usage limits are now visible in VS Code
  • Usage limits are now visible in Copilot CLI
  • More transparent rate-limit tracking is planned

3. Pro+ is the upgrade path for heavier usage

GitHub says Copilot Pro+ offers more than 5X the limits of Pro, so it is the clearest option for people who hit the new caps quickly. If you are already on Pro and need more headroom, Pro+ is the intended next step.

The catch is that Pro+ is not a general escape hatch for every user. The company has paused new sign-ups, so only some existing customers can move between plans right now, and verified students with active access have specific upgrade paths.

  • Pro+ has more than 5X the limits of Pro
  • Active Pro users can upgrade to Pro+
  • Verified students with active Copilot Student can upgrade to Pro/Pro+

4. Opus models are no longer in Pro

Another major change is model availability. Opus-family models are no longer available in Copilot Pro, while Opus 4.7 remains available in Pro+. GitHub also says Opus 4.5 and Opus 4.6 will be removed from Pro+.

That means the plan split is now about more than price or limits. If your workflow depends on a specific model family, you need to check the plan you are on before assuming the same options are still there.

Pro: Opus removed
Pro+: Opus 4.7 remains available
Pro+: Opus 4.5 and 4.6 will be removed

5. Refunds and plan changes are time-sensitive

If the new rules do not work for you, GitHub says you can cancel Pro or Pro+ and receive a refund for the unused time left on your current subscription. The company also gives a specific path in Settings → Billing and licensing → Licensing, then Manage subscription, then Cancel and refund.

There is one important warning: cancelling Pro or Pro+ is not reversible, except for verified students. GitHub also says the refund option is available until May 20, so anyone considering a change should act quickly.

  • Refund path: Settings → Billing and licensing → Licensing
  • Menu path: Manage subscription → Cancel and refund
  • Deadline: refund option available until May 20

How to decide

If you are an existing Pro user who rarely hits limits, the new setup may be manageable without changing plans. If you run into caps often, Pro+ is the obvious fit, since GitHub says it offers more than 5X the Pro limits.

If you are new to Copilot, the main choice is simpler: Copilot Free is still open, while paid individual sign-ups are paused. If you already pay and the changes do not fit your workflow, GitHub’s refund window and cancellation path are the main exit options.
